well, i have been seeing some traffic to my old geocities webpage recently and i hardly remember that it still existed. so i ended up checking the admin features in geocities and it still looks pretty much like it used to 4 years back! i edited the main pages to redirect users here so that no traffic would be wasted on those yahoo ad filled pages.i guess most users had been coming there through search engines. among some of the old visitors were people from my school in kerala. guys i havent heard from in a longgggg time!
now talking about search engines (subject of the day), Google is undoubtedly the best search engine, but i rate all search engines based on their search results for one word: “eapen”.
if my site is the top result, that is a good search engine, if it doesnt even list me on the first page, then it is not a search engine.
i am not all that self obsessed, but i like to see some relevance and http://eapen.byteverse.com is 100% relevant to eapen. in fact one of the reasons i am emphazing this is so that the search engines actually figure that out. instead of paying companies to bring my name as the top search result, i prefer to make the search engine work for it… and that means u slurp @ yahoo, bot @ msn, spider @ aol and google. (i was trying to rhyme that with “Get in the Ring by G’N'R’ “)
apropos, yahoo has launched their video search now at http://video.search.yahoo.com. Google should be coming out with their version soon.. but what i am really waiting for in this search arena is for yahoo’s desktop search tool since they just bought www.X1.com. x1 used to be a paid software and will continue to be for business users, even if it will be for free through yahoo in the upcoming days or weeks. i tried out msn’s desktop search tool, but didnt like it too much. i tried copernicus, didnt like that too much either. tried google, wasnt completely satisfied with that either. of the lot, i liked copernicus the best. i hope yahoo’s desktop search bar will be narrow since they will just have the y! icon instead of the 3 characters and a butterfly like msn. i hate anything that takes my desktop space unless i ask it to.
another really cool piece of software that i use is dynadvance.com‘s “Mail Notifier”. when i first tried it, it used to be free and then one day, they said it is alpha now and needs to be bought and i was disappointed. but i decided to try out the 21-day trial edition and while installing it, i realized that you could still use the free edition, and it would just restrict you to two accounts which is fine for me. i just needed somethign to check my yahoo mail since my gmail is checked by the gmail notifier firefox extension. so thank you dynadvance!
i have been planning to write and link my favorite and essential firefox extensions for a while, but i have just been too busy. did you know that firefox published their whopping 2-page ad on the new york times. that ad looked good! my name is also listed in the ad… or not… good luck searching through those thousands of names
and for all those who are wondering what the weather is like in “sunny florida”… its so cold here (50 fahrenheit
)now, that i have no idea how i used to live up in minneapolis, mn. …hehe…
but seriously.. like Cal said in The O.C. Season 2 Ep. 6 – “whats the point in living in south california, if the temperature is 50?”
ok, i have rambled enough for a day… so adios and be merry!
